My mother, Shelly West, and father, Allen Frizzell, surprise my grandmother, Dottie West, with my video birth announcement at one day old on the ACM Awards.
The award show was hosted by Dottie West, Mickey Gilley, Conway Twitty.
My mother Shelly West and uncle David Frizzell win duo of the year
You can see me make an appearance at the end of this video (dad Allen Frizzell holding me at 1 year old)… this was my second time being on the ACM awards, the first time was the year before when I was born. Mom Shelly West and my grandmother Dottie West singing “Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys”
I’ve heard I start dancing to them singing, but I have never seen the full footage, so if anyone has the full video they can send, I’d love to see it!
This was the 18th annual ACM awards in California, Tammy Wynette was a host, Willie Nelson had single of the year with “Always on My Mind,” Merle Haggard won song of the year for “Are the Good Times Really Over for Good” and mom and uncle David won vocal duo of the year (even beating Willie and Waylon 😯)
Performing “That’s The Way Love Goes” to a sold out show in Ohio
Thanks to Donna and Richard Lynch at Keepin' It Country Farm for the great country venue
Song: That’s The Way Love Goes
written by uncle Lefty and Whitey Shafer
Performing “Here Comes My Baby” on the Country Music Cruise, with Tim Atwood who graced the Grand Ole Opry stage with his talents for over thirty years.
This song my grandmother co-wrote with my grandad made her the first female country artist to receive a Grammy.
Singing mom’s part of “You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma” with uncle David as he’s being inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame… and dad on guitar!
Bluebird Cafe performance of “You’re The Reason God Made Oklahoma” with Bobby Tomberlin
Singing with Bobby Tomberlin, I joined him to do our version of my grandmother and Kenny Rogers hit, “Every Time Two Fools Collide.”
My grandmother, Dottie West recorded this song in 1981. Her duet partner, Kenny Rogers cut it first in 1978. My personal favorite version went to #3 on the charts by my buddy T. Graham Brown.
Written by Curly Putman, Rafe Van Hoy and Don Cook. WHAT A SONG.
Merle was heavily influenced by my uncle Lefty, so anyone with the name Frizzell he treated as family. I was really honored to get to be on an album he was on which was very full circle for me having snuck up onto his bus as a kid when mom (Shelly West) and uncle David had shows with him. (Watercolor portrait behind me is one I did of him awhile back)
This one is for you Merle 💙
In 2019, uncle Lefty’s version of "Long Black Veil" was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Recording Registry for being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"
Uncle Lefty was the first to record this song, and it went to #6. Since then it has been recorded and performed by more people than I could ever list, so I’ll just name some of them: Johnny Cash, Dave Mathews Band, Sammi Smith, Lee Ann Womack, Emmylou Harris, Jamey Johnson, Mick Jagger, the Grateful Dead, Joan Baez, The Byrds, Hank jr Bob Dylan and more.
What a haunting song.
Ole Harlan sure knew how to rip a heart out didn’t he? 😭
written by Harlan Howard and Chick Rains
First time ever singing this one, randomly decided to give it a try. I’ve always been a sucker for heartbreak song 💔
